The last of the candy has been finished, the empty bottles taken away, it’s time to take stock of the “damage” that Christmas and New Year’s celebrations have done to our bodies. Which dietary supplements can help us in removing them?

Festive gluttony does not only cause us shock at the sight of the needle of the personal scale. An unhealthy diet, alcohol and increased body fat also have epigenetic effects – negatively affecting the functioning of many genes in our bodies, thereby impairing our physical and mental fitness and increasing our risk of a range of diseases. How best to deal with these changes?

Fix what went wrong

The negative effects on the activity of our genes are primarily due to the increased amount of fat in the body. Research has clearly shown that obese people have different rates of epigenetic changes in their DNA, called gene methylation, compared to lean people. This is one of the reasons why obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes and cancer.

Excessive caloric intake also has negative epigenetic effects – restricting caloric intake (regardless of body weight) results in positive modification of epigenetic patterns, for example by increasing lifespan. In particular, the excessive consumption of sugars, which is typical at Christmas time, is harmful, as it increases inflammatory processes in the body through epigenetic means and leads to insulin resistance, which promotes weight gain and the risk of diabetes. Excess fat in the diet also has a negative epigenetic effect, which is also typical for the festive season.

All this is completed by too much alcohol, which also has a negative epigenetic effect – the liver and brain damage caused by alcohol is largely due to its epigenetic effects.

The good news is that this damage can be reversed because epigenetic changes are reversible. The basics should be calorie restriction, an emphasis on a healthy diet with limited amounts of sugar and saturated fat, and conversely plenty of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and grass-fed fish, alcohol restriction and of course exercise, which itself has significant positive epigenetic effects. Then some dietary supplements with epigenetic effects can be very beneficial.

5 clever natural helpers

Curcumin

The dye from turmeric root excels in its anti-inflammatory action. It can also reduce insulin resistance and improve pancreatic beta-cell function, making it suitable not only for diabetics but also for anyone trying to lose weight. In addition, they will be pleased with its ability to promote metabolic intensity, fat burning and limiting the formation of new adipose tissue. Curcumin also supports liver regeneration after toxin damage.

Check

Chicory contains fructooligosaccharides that promote the secretion of substances known as satiety hormones (e.g. PYY peptide or incretins). The consequence is a fairly significant reduction in appetite, which results in an automatic reduction in energy intake. Chicory is also one of the traditional herbs used to support liver function and detoxification, and these effects have been confirmed by modern scientific research. It can even support the regeneration of the liver after chemical damage, including alcohol, in an epigenetic way. Thanks to its prebiotic action, it also supports immunity and the state of the intestinal microflora. It is particularly good in combination with ginger.

Ginger

It also has a significant anti-inflammatory effect and also has thermogenic effects, i.e. it increases the intensity of metabolism. It also helps to regulate blood sugar levels and significantly supports immunity. A suitable form of taking ginger is an extract with a high content of the substance 6-shogoal.

Quercetin

This substance of plant origin positively affects the activity of enzymes that inhibit the proliferation of fat cells, reduces their variability and also affects their apoptosis (i.e. cell death). It can also reduce the absorption of fatty acids, cholesterol and glucose from the digestive tract, so that we end up taking in slightly less energy than the food actually contains. In addition, it significantly supports immunity and also reduces insulin resistance.

Baikal pine cone

Pine cones can also be very effective for people who are trying to lose weight. This is due to its anti-inflammatory action, its positive effect on hormonal balance and its ability to influence the production and oxidation of fatty acids. In addition, the scutellarin contained is able to reduce the concentration of factors that allow the formation of new adipose tissue cells. In addition, the rosehip is able to reduce blood glucose levels very effectively, after only four weeks of use, and also protects the liver from chemical damage and helps to reduce its steatosis (fatty liver). In winter, you will also appreciate its beneficial effect on immunity and its direct antiviral and antibacterial effect.
