Epigenetic reactions can influence the actual release of hormones, their blood levels and the sensitivity of target organs to them. Of particular importance is the influence of the so-called iodide pump, specifically the production of the NIS protein involved in it. The number of cellular receptors to which thyroid hormones bind can also be influenced epigenetically.
