Inflammatory bowel disease, manifested for example by diarrhoea, vomiting, weakness, fatigue, increased temperature, and in its later stages, joint and eye involvement, has extensive epigenetic links in addition to genetic ones. For example, affected people have a 10-fold increase in methylation of certain genes, and the rate of methylation has been shown to increase when the disease is in the active phase.
