Psoriasis is an inflammatory disease that affects mainly the skin, but can also affect the joints – then we are talking about psoriatic arthritis. It is relatively common, affecting up to 3% of the population, and is an autoimmune disease. A characteristic feature of psoriasis is the so-called hyperproliferation of keratinocytes, i.e. the excessive rapid proliferation of skin cells. Skin cells thus accumulate and are subsequently invaded by immune cells, leading to inflammation. Patients are also characterised by impaired cell signalling and a deterioration in the balance of the gut microbiome (particularly a reduction in butyrate-producing bacteria).
